Special Events at CAG/ASG
September 15th, is a national holiday commemorating Guatemala’s independence from Spain in 1821. At CAG, students and staff celebrate andcommemorate on the days prior to the 15th, by parading national dress and colors, selling and eating typical foods, exhibiting/selling Guatemalan arts, including textiles, music and crafts, playing marimba music, decorating hallways and classrooms, showing videos, playing interactive and educational games and more. Civic ceremonies are held throughout the school. The objective is to promote and develop a deeper respect and love for the country, its history and its customs.
This well known game has become a community and family tradition at CAG, organized by the Bingo Committee of the APM/PTA. Each year, at the end of September, over 800 members of the community, including parents, students and staff come together to try their luck with bingo cards in an attempt to win valuable prizes. The atmosphere is filled with good family fun, topped off by numerous food stands selling typical Guatemalan favorites. This is one of the first fund raising events where a portion of the proceeds go to a local Scholarship Foundation that the school has supported for many years.
Section specific activity that celebrates everyday heroes, time periods, historical figures, whimsical characters, sports figures, etc. Scheduled for the last day of October, students, teachers and administrators, come to school dressed according to the theme of their section.
It is a school-wide community service event in which CAG families donate used items for an enormous “garage” sale. Items are purchased at very low prices by CAG employees. Middle school students, staff and APM/PTA volunteers carry out the sale and the funds collected are used to buy Christmas baskets for all the CAG support staff.
These events are sponsered by the Library staff twice a year (one in November and one in May). The fair in November includes popular books in English and in Spanish from several local bookstores. The fair in May contains several books that can be read for summer reading projects. Students K - 5 are assigned specific times to visit the fair, and teachers are expected to help students find appropriate books or to make lists of the books they would like to read. Teachers may purchase books for themselves or for their classrooms.
This is an evening event that takes place prior to the US Thanksgiving holiday designed to build school spirit and support for the school’s sports program. Teams from all three sections of the school host friendly intramural games, as well as fun family games such as hoop shooting, rallies, soccer kick offs, etc. Former CAG students are encouraged to return to form teams to play against teacher teams, too. All participants have a chance to play basketball, soccer, volleyball or baseball.
“Noche de Luces” (Night of Lights)
Another school-wide tradition, this activity takes place the second week of December in the evening before the mid-year break begins. The purpose of this event is to enhance understanding and appreciation of the various cultures in the school and their traditions at the end of the year. The event also serves the purpose of helping Habitat for Humanity while raising awareness of community service at CAG. Art teachers host displays of student work, groups such as the chorus and orchestra present performances, parent representatives provide a variety of delicious foods for sale, troupes of teachers sing carols, and there are craft sales representing the various cultures. Teachers support the event by collecting admission at the gates and by supervising activities for students such as cookie and ornament decorating workshops.
Anyone and everyone who works at the School gathers together to share some good conversation and relax before the end of year break. The School and the PTA mothers work together to host a lunch, recognize years of service, and also to organize a raffle. This event lasts two hours, and at the end all staff wishes happy holidays.
Family Reading Afternoon
An afternoon event in the Early Childhood and Elementary Sections, that is offered at least once for each grade level throughout the school year in which students of particular grade levels and their parents are invited to the Library to participate in unique and engaging activities . Administrators, teachers from the grade level teams and library staff members are responsible for the planning and delivery of these events. Teachers are required to attend at least one Family Reading Night during the year.
Teacher Talent Show
This is a favorite event for teachers, parents and students. Towards the end of the school year, teachers get together to put on a benefit/fundraiser for a pre-selected charity. The talent, humor, good will and camaraderie are evident as the teachers show their talents, or proudly demonstrate their lack thereof. The auditorium is packed with paying students who wish to see their teachers in a very different light. It has become one of the traditions of CAG and teachers’ efforts are greatly appreciated.
100th Day of School
Students all across the school enjoy this day since it marks the more than half way point of the year. Early Childhood kids marched through all sections of the school to celebrate 100 days of school! A drum band, bagpiper, bright hats and instruments crafted by the students give energy and color to the event. Elementary varies their celebrations from the arts to values. It is a day that rejunvenates us all.
Destination Imagination Tournament
An annual tournament hosted each year by CAG where teams from Guatemala and Central America gather to compete in challenges of creative thinking. The American School groups range from Rising Stars in the early grades to High School veteran teams. Teachers and parents support the teams throughout the year honing their team skills and problem solving skils. Many of our students advance each year to Global Finals in Tennessee.
